iphone stuck at apple loading - no sim, no service

I got an iphone with no sim card and no dock for the card. what I am wondering is

can hack the iphone without having a sim card
can i fit a sim card in there somehow without the dock?

if those are possible above, how come my iphone keeps getting stuck at the apple loading screen?

I've tried to hack it with various firmwares over and over again. never boots up.
