iPhone "stuck" on compass inteference

I was using my phone in downtown the other day and the phone started to display the compass interference message. I have repeatedly tried to calibrate it in areas where I am 20 feet from everything electric or metallic (even under the ground to the best of my knowledge), but it still will not calibrate.

I have tried rotating the phone, using the figure 8 in vertical and horizontal modes, and even tried to restart the phone repeatedly.

Help?

This happened to me last year about a month after I bought the phone. Restore it in itunes. Worked for me.
