IPhone stuck

I decided to finally update my iphone tonight. have been running 4.0 since it first came out. well, after the update, i received an error and my phone is now stuck in recovery mode. The problem here is that itunes isnt even recognizing my phone. I am wiling to do a restore, but need it to recognize my phone. any suggestions? Thanks in advance. Also, this is a 3GS if that makes a difference
