iPhone sync problem: ical and contacts

I wonder if someone could help me with this. I expected this to be easy, so maybe I'm missing something obvious.
I have been without my laptop (Macbook Air) for a couple of weeks for a repair. I have kept my calendar and contacts up to date on my iPhone (4) and was expecting a sync to then update these on my computer, but they remain unchanged. I selected calendar and contacts to be synced in iTunes. Is there something else I should have done?

Can someone advise me? The help files don't seem to cover this!
