Iphone sync to Imac

Hello,

My Imac hard drive died. I installed a new one and now want to transfer my Itunes - music, movies, etc.... - from my Iphone to my Imac.

Can this be done? It keeps prompting me to erase my Iphone!!

Also - I find it very strange that I can't just download my previous purchases from the Itunes Store....what is up with that?
