iPhone sync w/iTunes to mac with cable or WiFi?

iTunes WiFi sync is turned on in iPhone settings. I also occasionally plug the iPhone into my iMac. Today when plugging iPhone into iMac iTunes did an extensive sync with Genius data and apparently also did a sync of 187 songs to my iPhone.

1) is it necessary to plug iPhone into to iMac?
2) why can't the genius data sync via WiFi sync?
