In iTunes when my phone was syncing, there was an indication of the progress. For example, it would read, "Preparing for backup" "Copying X photos" and other messages. I don't see that in the Finder other than the small pie chart progress icon next to where it lists my iPhone. Is this functionality gone in Catalina? Has anyone given feedback to Apple on this? I stepped off the beta train for Calalina and iOS 13.

Hello, I have raised this with Apple Support today as I get very similar issues with the finder synch. The storage available bar at the moment shows that the iPhone is over capacity even though i.e. have 100GB free, the synch seems to go on for ever and photos that I have previously synched seem to be getting remove from the photo app on the phone the next time it synch.
