iPhone syncs when iTunes has been closed?

This is the first time it's happened to me today, but I closed itunes after transferring my purchases from the app store, and it continued syncing afterwards? except it was through a window's progress bar. Is this normal?

Yes this is normal. My iPhone does it sometimes.
