When I tether my MacBook to my iPhone - is there a way to only allow my browser (or any other MacBook apps of my choice) to make use of the connection?

I don't want to burn up all my iPhone data allowance each time I tether because my Mac is trying to check Mail / start backup / look for OS updates and all the other processes it kicks off as soon as it sees a net connection.

Many thanks in advance.
