iPhone Trade in?

I have a iPhone 6 plus that is on my parents family plan that I would like to trade in and apply the apple gift card to my new iPhone upgrade program. should i go to the apple store now and do this or wait till I'm enrolled.

I believe you have to be enrolled in the plan (which can't happen until they run your credit on date of purchase) before you can start paying for it.
