I have an iPhone 5 running on Simple Mobile. Everytime the phone goes to Edge, and I am in call, the data just drops. Data stays if I have 3G or 4G. Anyone else experiencing this and is there any way to stop it?

That's because you cannot do talk and pull data while on 2G Edge. Its always been like that.
You need 3G or hspa+ (4G) for that.
There's a way to stop it, get a better carrier;)

Would have gotten a better carrier if I had a better job :p

Do you know if it's going to the be the same with iOS 7 or the next iPhone?

Yes it will, it is a limitation with how EDGE works, no matter what phone or what software is running on that phone you will never have simultaneous voice and data over EDGE

its a limitation of the network and protocol.

ex. Right now LTE can only handle packet switching and not voice...so everytime you go on a call it bumps you down.

correct. As far as i know, the GS3 is the only smartphone that supports HD Voice via Voice over LTE
It doesn't do voice over LTE it still uses 3G (1x to be specific).

I can talk and surf on my iphone but it gets bump to 4G speeds.
No, the GS3 has two antennas one for voice and one for data so you can continue to use 3G or LTE when you're on the phone. Mind you this is on a CDMA network (Sprint) so it may be a little different on a GSM carrier like T-Mobile or AT&T.

Hmm that's not true.

I had both the S3 and S4 and there were times when I was in Edge, and it stayed while on call.

Based on the quote above I guess the S3 and probably the S4 do have separate antennas for voice and data, so that's probably why it works. Otherwise EDGE still doesn't support simultaneous voice and data.

Try Airvoice wireless. They have unlimited talk and text and 1GB data for $40, HSPA+ speed on AT&T network.
