I have an iPhone from a friend, when I check it's imei it says it is unlcoked but I still get No Service, why would that be?
IOS 5.1.1

If it says no service then it's an issue with the SIM card or such.
If it was still locked it would say invalid sim and wouldn't accept any other sim but the company that its locked to.
Try a restart or reset network and double check that the sim works.

Is there a possibility that is is locked even if the imei checker i used said it is unlocked? If I do a restore would I need a sim to activate?

who did you unlock it with?

some websites that are fake.. will have it say you are unlocked after you pay them lol.

also.. when inserting a sim for a different carrier it can sometime take several minutes to actually connect (its taken 10 minutes on my ip5)
