iPhone Unlocked Internationally bought via AT&T?

Hey all,

I sat on hold for 30 min. tonight with my local Apple store as opposed to driving across town....I want another phone, unlocked 4S, for my wife when we move overseas. I have an AT&T purchased 4S.

I was told I could buy an iPhone 4S unlocked in that store, the other option he stated: was to buy an AT&T 4S which is unlocked for international SIMs by default, but locked to At&T stateside.

I have have never really dealt with an Apple store before, any thoughts as to the veracity of this claim? He alluded to the fact that this isn't common knowledge yet, or something to that effect...

It did seem like he simply re-explained the same features as the unlocked version which Apple notes can't be used with Verizon and some other carrier iirc, but he did specifically say "OR" which got me wondering. Thanks.
 
I went to the Tampa Apple Store at International Mall.

I got in line to buy (2) unlocked 32GB iPhones. I was turned away as the rep. told me new iPhone 4S from ATT should work overseas.

I went over and asked a different rep. working with my in-laws the same thing, and got the same answer - that new ATT iphone 4S will work overseas with other SIM.

I called Apple on the phone the next day and was told NO, IT WILL NOT WORK.

WTF?

You should file a citation against that store. Upper management needs to know.
