Got a new iPhone 13 mini and hope I'm not the only one... amused... by the setup process. It "says" setup can have the new phone ready to use in as little as 15 minutes... however it forces me to update to the absolute latest iOS system during that process... Now I'm left staring at a screen saying 16 hours remaining... to download and install 3GB (and that's after it sat for some time saying the update had been requested)

There will always be some kind of update to install to iOS so the only people who're actually getting to use their phones after "only 15 minutes" of setup either opened their brand-new phones in the magical half-day where the shipped software version is truly the latest or those who're buying it used from a seller who bothered to update to the latest that morning before wiping it.

It wouldn't be a problem if it downloaded the update in the background but since the setup process is all or nothing it means I have two phones completely unusable as my old phone is also stuck in the setup process "Updating" the backup it created an hour ago...

It's one of the dozens of ways it feels like Apple's teams have stopped talking to each other and a dwindling few of them are thinking about the actual end user experience.

Edit: So just for giggles I connected the phone to my MacBook with Content Cacheing sharing its wired ethernet connection to the phone and the download process finally sped up to say only 14 minutes instead of 16 hours... Still, the phone is multi-tasking-capable therefore it should be "capable" of downloading the update in the background.

Sure, yes, go ahead and force-schedule the update for tonight or tomorrow but at least acknowledge that not everyone has direct hardwire connection to the update servers.

I feel really sorry for people who haven't had to deal with this stuff for 20+ years as I have to know how to mitigate these problems or understand why it's happening
