Hello all,

Just wanted to post my experience today, wondering if anyone has had the same problem before?

I went to upgrade my iPhone through the iPhone upgrade program, which I am already enrolled in (since last year) After selecting the phone, going through all the security checks etc. (Checking my identity, address etc) We came to the point of actually approving the upgrade. At which point it said the loan was rejected and I'm unable to upgrade.

This makes no sense to me as I'm already enrolled in the program. (I haven't missed a payment since I started) Even the person in Apple mentioned that since I'm already enrolled there should be no reason at all that the upgrade wouldn't be approved.

Anyway, called Barclays when I got home and the woman on the phone mentioned that she couldn't see any reason on her end why the loan was rejected, yet there was nothing else she could do.

So essentially that means now that Im stuck with current phone until the full loan is paid off... Whats the point in the iPhone Upgrade program if you can't actually upgrade...

Just to make this clear, this is in the UK. Has anyone else experienced this problem? If so, did Barclays give you any sort of reason why they wouldn't approve the upgrade?

Thanks in advance.

I assume the credit check will be for another 20 month agreement for the full price of your new phone (Apple settles hte previous loan) so there is a risk of rejection at any point, and the previous agreement doesn't necessarily mean anything

It seems to be, I have been checking my credit score on multiple sites, Doesn't seem to have changed in anyway. What I don't understand is that they rejected the Upgrade.

I would have understood better if I was taking out a whole new loan.

Its a real shame, doesn't put much confidence in the upgrade program itself.

Literally what I do. Due to the iPhones holding their value so well I always buy it outright on a credit card, set a payment of around £35 a month and then a year later sell the phone, which pays off the debt. Then start again with the new phone

That’s actually a brilliant idea. Annoyingly now though I’ll have to wait to pay off the rest of that phone won’t I.

Do you own the phone after the payments? If so can you not just sell it now and pay the outstanding value off?

My friend had EXACTLY the same issue, and called Barclays and they fobbed him off. However, he called Barclays again, was very persistent, but he checked all his personal details with Barclays to ensure they were correct, and then Barclays told him to go back to the Apple Store, and he did, and was approved there and then.

Worth a try again with Barclays, be persistent and check all your information is correct, likewise it matches with what Apple has - very easy to have a typo on those small screens. Good luck!

Interesting... here in the states we use Citizens One bank for our Apple Upgrade Plan. I don't know anyone who has been rejected for an upgrade! My wife and I have been doing this for a long time. Hope you get this resolved. That would frustrate me.

When you upgrade it is actually a whole new loan. You are effectively starting again.

The reason you have been rejected may not necessarily be just down to Barclays, it could be a number of things.

Mine was rejected last year because my email address did not match my Barclaycard one. That was just ridiculous.

You could try and sell the phone for more than your owe like i did. Then you pay the loan off. You also get a a refund of a years Apple care on top.

Sometimes having “too many”(?!?)credit checks done within a certain time frame can have a negative impact on credit applications. e.g. if you’re turned down for a loan or credit card, I’ve heard you shouldn’t apply again for another for at least 6 months. It’s also possible that your credit rating etc is perfectly fine but the lender has decided to raise the bar of acceptable criteria e.g. if the bank has decided they don’t want to lend as much this year as they did last year. Sorry this is speculation but, if they won’t approve the agreement it’s up to them and I don’t believe they are required to give a reasons. Check Money Saving Expert and official regulators for more information.

Yep, I decided because I was in the Apple store would use my iCloud email, what a mistake that was. Made sure I used the other one this year and worked ok yesterday.
Honestly, I keep forgetting I even have an iCloud email address. I just had to go and check to see what they were are. LOL

Hi i just wanted to know if your issue got resolved as yesterday I went to sign upto the apple upgrade programme and i selected my phone and when they went through the credit checks barclays rejected it. I rang Barclays this morning and they said they have no record of the loan being on the system. so unsure what to do now
