I upgraded to the iPhone 4 on my line in July 2011 so im not eligible to upgrade to the iPhone 4s for 18 months. My wife however is eligible to upgrade on her line next month. Can I extend her contract for 2 more years by having her upgrade and get the iPhone 4s and then we swap SIM cards so I end up with the iPhone 4S and she gets my iPhone 4 or does AT&T not allow that?

thanks
Angelo

Watch your next months bill if you go this route. I have done this two times now (once with the 3g, once with the 4S) and my billed was fubar the following month both times. Once the rep sees that you did, indeed, not have the new 4S on your wife's line for anything longer than just a couple of minutes, they should straighten things out for you. Better yet, if you can do this at the ATT store, you will likely have a smoother transition. I had to do mine at the Apple store every time and then go get new sims at ATT across the way.

I wouldn't do it!!!

Just hang in there for the iPhone 5. If you already have a 4... the 4S isn't that big of a difference.

If there's a problem with my bill they should be able to take care of it right? I don't see the big deal in swapping sims since we both have data plans and family messaging on a family plan.

I wouldn't do it either. OP should already be kicking himself for getting the 4 in July. Don't put yourself through that again.

That's something to consider unfortunately I'm not du for an upgrade until 2/13

You can use your wife's upgrade for the 5 when it comes out.

Yes. Do this.

Just keep using your 4 and sit on your wifes update until the 5 comes out. Use your wifes update on the 5 (give her the 4 or sell it)

This is basicaly what I'm doing. In 10/10, we both got new phones. I put her on a 1 year contract and I stayed with a 2 year.

Therefore in 10/11, she was due for an upgrade (ironically on 10/15/11). I waited till November or december to get the 4S for myself on her line. My line (2 year contract started in 10/10), is somehow eligible for an upgrade right now even though it was supposedly a 2 year contract. I am sitting on it till the 5 comes out. I'll upgrade then and give my wife the 4S.

They will. The thing is, with the iPhone, since it comes with a sim, the Apple store will activate THAT sim. So your wife's old sim will be deactivated and the new micro sim will be what is active. I guess I made the assumption that your wife's phone is a dumb phone line (ie no data). If it isn't, you will have o issues swapping sims. If it is, you need to make sure the ATT rep removes the data from her line.

Thanks for the advice guys. When is the 5 supposed to come out? This summer?

What if I bought a 4s off eBay. Would i just be able to put my sim card from my 4 in there and just use it without even having to call AT&T? This way I can still get the 5 when I'm elegible.

You could go that route.

I think I may since I can then sell my 4 on eBay. Hopefully it gets me good money to help offset the price if the 4s since it comes with AppleCare until next year July.

Anyone else see a common denominator here !

The guy gets the new shiny phone and the wife gets the hand me down !

Lol.

She will get the 5 when it comes out lol

Yeah right....:roll eyes:.....ok.

I can see it now.

You best have this 4s honey as this new 5 is just way too buggy and has lots that needs working out. This 4s is so alike to your iPhone 4 your using right now, it'll be easier for you to use.........

lol
