I've always gotten the latest iPhone every year. I sell my current iPhone on some trade in site like Gazelle pre order the new phone and when it arrives use the the box it came in to mail in the device I'm selling. Seems to have worked well for a number of years.

Now the reason for my question. Apple right now has the 256GB iPhoneX listed at 56.12 x 12 months which equals 673.44 much lower than purchasing it outright for $1149. Now I don't know what a site like Gazelle would give me for the iPhoneX but I assume its less than the value Apple seems to be putting on it at $475.56?

I do see a big negative that a credit check is needed with every upgrade but am I missing something else? To me it seems a little to good to be true. It's cheaper than the full price of the phone, I don't have to worry about selling it to Gazelle or another site, and I get Apple Care included.

Is it harder to pre order two iPhones if you use the Upgrade Plan? Seems like I might have to put in extra details like SSN. And if the device is popular like the iPhoneX will be I might miss the first batch of shipments.

As a price compare Gazelle will give me $345 for my iPhone 7 with 128GB.

Thanks for any help or advice you can give me.

Dan

The monthly price you are looking at is multiplied over 24 months not 12. Also the monthly cost includes AppleCare+ which is an additional 200 on top of the cost of the phone, so (1149+200) / 24 = 56 and change a month.

Also, there is only the initial credit inquiry when you sign up for the iPhone Upgrade Program. Subsequent credit checks annually are a soft pull so long as you remain a customer/client of Citizens (the underwriter), and won't add another inquiry to your credit report.
