iphone usa to uk

hey,i got real problem here... friend of mine bought iphone 3gs in usa and came back to uk and give me as early xmas present... and of course its not working... i bought 02 pay as you go sim,activated it but still its not working,when i connect to internet(itunes) it says-sim card inserted in this phone does not appear to be supported. iphone is updated to version 3.1.2
so basically my iphone is not working at all... pls help with advice!!!

The phone is carrier-locked to AT&T

The solution is to unlock it with Blackra1n and Blacksn0w, and you do that like this:
