Recently I seem to be using a heap more data than ever before.
For example, it looks like I used to use ~150MB data per MONTH, but this month I used all 500MB allowance in 20 days.

Tracked my MiFi usage yesterday (I get terrible cell coverage at work so use a MiFi on a different network) & it looks like I used 350MB in a single DAY

This is not good ...
So what has changed recently:

-Apps on my 3GS is crashing a lot recently (10+ times per day) but not sure why this would affect data usage

-the iPhone also gets pretty warm these days. I wonder if that's an indication that it's working hard ... sending data..?

-I moved to Aperture on my MBP (which also uses the MiFi). But the MBP is only on for max 1 hour each morning before work. After that it's asleep (so shouldn't be consuming data, right?

So I can't think why I should be using so much data

I don't watch live video or anything like that - email, RSS feeds, Instapaper, Informant HD, Things - what could be using all this data & how can I tell, short of progressively deleting all my apps?

Any help would be *much* appreciated

In the meantime I've deleted Reeder & Feedler, and changed data Fetch from 15 mins to 1 hour... here's hoping ...

Do you keep the Multitask bar cleared out. To many apps in the multitask bar can cause all sorts of problems. Some of them use the internet and they use memory, causing crashes. I clean my multitask at least once a day.

Yes, could be.

I don't have any experience with MiFi, so I can't help you there.

That should help.

Thought I should post a final message in case anyone else has this issue & finds this thread on search.

I wiped my phone & set it up in iTunes as a 'New Phone,' rather than 'Restore from Backup' so I had to load all my apps back on, but that was pretty quick & simple.

It's cured pretty much everything - my phone no longer crashes & the battery last all day pretty comfortably. It's also using far far less data, so I get through about 400mb in month

So all good
