Iphone voicemail?

I have the new Iphone and missed calls come through on an SMS, my contacts tell the answering service gives them only 10 seconds to leave a message which is not enough. Secondly, is there any way to retrieve and playback voice messages or are they just kept as an sms alert?

I ask because I have been a long term Nokia user and I am used to a recorded message on a missed call that I can retrieve and play back..
