Popular Mechanics held a smartphone showdown in their latest issue--focusing mainly on usability.

The main goal of our test was to assess the functionality and ease of use of each device. So we asked seven people who had little to no experience with smartphones to analyze our test devices alongside PM’s experts. Our testers evaluated photos from each phone’s digital camera, walked around with the devices in their pockets to deliver a “comfort” rating and then sat for a series of grueling time trials for the various functions of each phone. With no practice and no user’s manual, testers tried to make a call, send an e-mail, take a photo, play a song and load a Web page on each phone.
They tested the iPhone against the top 7 smartphones...and I won't make you guess.

The two winners were the Samsung Blackjack and....the iPhone! :)

Though they gave A for iPhone, the same rating as Blackjack, somehow the descriptions indicate that iPhone deserves a A++ ( relative to Blackjack's A ). Price is the biggest factor in favor of Blackjack but otherwise these guys did not give credit for the absolute joy it is to use the iPhone.

I don't trust that review simply because they excluded the Treo 750 from the test. That phone beats the blackjack in specs, functionality, and usability.

I'm surprised that they gave the N95 only a 'C'. Compared to the iPhone, I find it much more easier to dial someone (considering that I have most of my important contacts on speed dial) all without even looking at the phone.

(I do have both phones by the way. I switch every couple of days)
