iPhone vs. iPad in sound quality

Yesterday I compared the sound quality on my iPhone 5s and iPad Air and got the impression the iPhone had more 'compressed' sound. I listened to the same tracks using the same headphones.

Does the audio processing indeed differ on iDevices?
