I have had an iPod touch 16GB 1st gen for over a year and for me the battery life is great, I do a lot of wifi and listening to music and the occasional game and the battery usually only needs charging every other day.

However I hear complaints about the iPhone battery life all the time, is there really a massive difference between the battery life of the two just because of the phone/3G services?

does anyone have any experience of owning both an Ipod touch and iPhone and can tell me if I'll see a significant drop in battery life if I buy an iPhone?

Yes. Particularly with 3G on, you'll notice a little more than a day of battery on average.
