If the new iPhone is getting a smaller dock connector, could it be a thunderbolt connector? Or would that be overkill? Would certainly make updating the iPhone fast, right?

I'll pretty much guarantee that it will NOT be a thunderbolt connector for the following reasons:
  • Only a minority of iPhone users actually have thunderbolt ports on their computers. Why include it when no one can use it?
  • The thunderbolt circuitry would take up much more space in the phone than USB.
  • Thunderbolt is much more expensive to implement than USB, and would add quite a bit to the cost of the phone.
  • A thunderbolt cable costs $50. Do you think Apple is going to provide that for free with every iPhone? Do you think they'll sell iPhones without a sync cable?

No I highly doubt the flash memory in the iPhone can even support the higher read/write speeds anyway
