Can somebody give me a good reason why an iPhone is seemingly unable to use 3G and wifi networks simultaneously?

Example:

I have both 3G and wifi turned on. I move into an area with low/no wifi signal but full 3G signal. I try to load a web page but my iPhone tells me no Internet connection could be found. So I turn my wifi off - and immediately it connects to the page via 3G...

Now i would understand if phones werent able to use both signals simultaneously, due to processing power or interference or whatever... But surely it'd be possible for my phone to automatically try a different method of data access if one was not available??
