Iphone with notification LED like blackberry?

I know there has been lots of discussion over the year about people wanting a small notification light like blackberry has for message and emails on their iphone. I was watching "House of Cards" on Netfllix and one of the actors looked at their iphone and what did I see, a small blinking light on the front of the phone when a message came in. For those who have Netflix, check it out season 1, episode 6 at the 29 minute mark. This is an iphone, but where did the light come from?
