iPhone wont charge, help :(

i had this problem on my 3gs and i have now since replaced the dock assembly on it, i have took it apart serveral times checking that i have pluged all connectors back in which i have but yet it still doesnt work, i know that the iphone can see the lead when i plug it in because the iphone turns on when i plug it in but yet it wont charge or show up on the computer, i have plugged it into the wall plug and also i got no results, any help greatly appriciated

switch the mute switch 4 times (up, down, up down)
now press home and power for 6-10 seconds

founds this online, not sure if it will help, but it worked for alot of folks..

I cant even atempt that because the mute button doesn't work
