iphone wont connect to WEP protected wifi network

my 1st gen iphone wont connect to my belkin54g router which is protected with a WEP setting. whenever i type in the correct password or even a wrong password it comes up with a message saying "unable to join the network belkin54g"
can someone help me if im going wrong somewhere ? thanks
