Buddy gave me an older iPhone.

I want to use it just an iPOD.

So I plugged it, let itunes download latest software and update it.

Now, it keeps saying, no SIM card and i can't do anything. NO SIM CARD INSTALED - Insert a valid SIM with no PIN lock to activate iPhone.

What does this mean?

on the iPhone it goes directly to make a call - as if everything got reset.

How do I fix this to allow me to use it as an iPod and Camera etc...

Thanks

Step by step help would be great. I'm not so good with the iPHONE/iPOD Stuff.

All it needs is a valid SIM card long enough to activate the phone, then you can remove it. It doesn't necessarily have to be an active SIM with a data plan and everything, just one from the carrier that your phone is locked to.

You will continue to get the NO SIM alerts from time to time, but you can easily dismiss them.

I use my old 3Gs as a dedicated TomTom gps device in my car, no sim card, no problem.

BTW, activating the phone is not the same thing as activating a contract.

So just my friend who has an iPHONE to put his sim card in, activate it and then that's it?
