iPhone won't load pics from external HDD via sync

I have an external HDD with tons and tons of photos (more than I have capacity on my iPhone), however, there are a lot of Albums and Events (God, I wish we still could make Events) that I want to put on my iPhone. However, iTunes is not giving me the option to sync the photos from my external HDD. Any thoughts/ideas/suggestions?
