iphone wont turn on once i hit sleep button. please help

please help,
i have a iphone 3g that is jail-broken and when i hit the sleep button and let it sleep for maybe 30 sec. to a minute it just is really hard to get back to the slide on unlock screen, it is really frustrating because i usually have to hold down the sleep and home button for about 15 sec. for it to bring it back up to the slide to unlock screen...
if anyone could help , that'd be great.
