after less than a year. Absurd. Should I take it to the Genius Bar and ask for a replacement while it is still under warranty?

Apple will tell you that it must fail by their internal tests to get replaced. I tried to get the store to replace my battery that was about 83% on my Mac just before my warranty expired. A store didn't do it, but Apple Care Customer Support did it for me. Be prepared to be told 89% is normal wear and tear. My 8+ dropped to only 99% after being used for about 12 months.

Thanks for the advice. I know AppleCare support is leagues better than in store, but if they tell me 89% is normal for a phone that is less than 10 months old there’s going to be a manager involved next.
 
Batteries are rated to retain 80% health after 500 cycles. If you consume a cycle a day, your battery is rated to last roughly 17 months. Your battery is perfectly normal.

You don't have a leg to stand on. The battery capacity has to fall below 80% within the span of the warranty to be considered in poor health and replaced without charge.

The level of wear that you've described is within the realm of normal.

I just got mine replace at 89% wear on my SE but I did have a couple of unexpected shutdowns. Performance mode was active on it. Was only 9 months old.
 
My iPhone 7 is at 90 percent after two years. But I'm going to pay to have Apple replace the battery while the cost is still discounted. I haven't been able to convince myself that the new iPhones are worth the upgrade for me, so I may hang onto the phone for awhile longer.

Doubt a manager would do much tbh. Only reason why they gave me the 83% one was because my Apple Care was about to expire and my situation was weird. I went in June to get evaluated and they said to come back in August to be evaluated since they notated my account. Then my Apple Care was 2 days away from being expired. They said they would take care of it and replace the battery. Difference is a Mac battery replacement isn't something like $29. It can cost as much as another lower end Windows laptop.

If they can give you a replacement for $29, might be a compromise you should consider.
