I have iPhone X with Black Apple Folio case.

I recently have got numerous complaints that my calls sound muffled and quality is not good. So I called Apple and they ran some test and no hardware issues with phone. Every time I take Folio case off, quality sounds perfect. I even tested making videos of testing voice quality and have found everytime folio case is folder back the mic gets distorted. I believe the magnet built in case is causing interference with mic. Going to Apple later today to show them exactly how case effects microphone. Wondering if anyone else is having this issue. If you have Folio case just test making video of you talking with case folded back and normal and it’s clear audio difference.

Yes I have the same issue. I’m on my second phone. I would like to hear if anyone else has this problem. I have tried 3 cases all the same. The caller can’t hear you!? What next?

There a couple of threads on this. The latest theory is that the magnets in the folio flap are interfering with a microphone.

This video (lifted from another thread) illustrate where the magnets are located.

Thank you. I do have 3 different cases and each case causes microphone problems so this is a device issue. I’m surprised there are not many other complaints about this problem.?

I have this issue but I need to use the phone with a case for a start the phone needs protection because it’s a slippery without a case and I dropped it breaking the glass yesterday..Does any have a solution yet?

Have you guys returned this to the shop?
I am thinking of taking mine back on Monday, as this is affecting every call I make with the folio case now.
What a shambles..

Has anyone tryed turning off noise cancellation. Settings/accessibility/noise cancellation. I heard the case is causing some kind of tunnel effect with the speakers voice and rear mic and the noise cancellation. You can also make sure the front flap doesnt cover the rear mic between the cameras when making calls. Both of these will solve the folio case problem.

This issue is happening to me. All those have long the issue, if you don’t fold your flap to the back of the phone the issue won’t happen. Things like disabling noise cancelation are rediculous options on a $1150 phone with a $100 case!

I called Apple to try to resolve this issue. What I dealt with was one of the most rediculous customer service experiences I’ve ever had. Feel free to read what I wrote on Facebook here: https://www.facebook.com/nima.nekoui/posts/10155097557708015

I am absolutely disappointed, not just in the technical glitch that we all are experiencing, but the response I got. Best of luck to each of you, if I made the escalation of this issue better heard, I hope you have a smoother and more constructive path to service and support.

I also spoke to Apple they wanted pictures of the case x 2 that I have bought. They are due to report back to me tomorrow so I will up date everyone. I think this could be a handset issue how they will resolve it I don’t know.? Full refund.??

I have this problem too and had a Genius Bar appointment this morning to see if the problem could be resolved. There was nothing wrong with my X (although Apple did offer to give me a new one). It seems, after a little research, that the back cover microphone (amongst the camera lenses) does not like being covered by the front cover of a folio case being folded over it. Therefore, you should make a call without folding the cover over the lens. This is clearly going to be awkward.

[doublepost=1513008849][/doublepost]I have a Nodus folio case, that to muffles audio, take off the case and its all good. This is a flaw in the iPhone x design it would seem. Shame as I like folio cases and the iPhone x

I had Nodus Access 1 case a long time ago. They used to have a micro suction strip on the front to hold down the cover. Unfortunately it left a mark on the glass when opened. It probably removed the coating on the front glass. Can you tell me, when you remove your X from the Nodus, does it leave an imprint in the back glass? Thanks for letting me know.

I just returned my folio case (had it since launch). I had the same mic issues and just could not deal with it anymore. It was a great case in most other aspects but this issue is a fatal defect in the design. If the noise cancellation mic was on the top edge or somewhere else that isn't blocked by the case flap it would be fine but it right where it cannot be.

I ended up picking up a saddle brown regular leather case and I am pleased with it so far.

It might be the Phone itself.
Apple made the iPhone 7 PLUS pretty bad, mine had to be naked nor will nobody hear me
I had the 7 Plus and never had that issue and I had several different off market cases on it plus the Apple leather case, not a folio one though.

Is it just an issue with the X or does other iphones have this issue?

I cannot speak to other iPhone's but, based on my observation, it would occur with any phone that has a microphone on the back of the device. It is a mechanical issue. The cover of the folio is folded back and over the back of the device when you are on a call (or just using the phone really). The cover obscures the rear microphone. It also can serve to allow the rear microphone to hear your voice while you speak by acting like a sound reflector. Since this mic is meant to pick up background noise and cancel it out, if it hears your voice it would try to cancel it out as well. That is why the other party would hear you distorted. Your phone is trying to cancel out your own voice! The only way to eliminate this effect would be to turn off the noise cancellation function of the phone which rather defeats the purpose.

This to me seems like someone at Apple had a great idea for a case and designed a brilliant solution. They just did not get in touch with the designers of the device that located the rear mic for an integration conversation causing a fundamental flaw.

I just removed the magnet in my cover and try later on again.
Let you know!

I’m interested to know if this has helped.

[doublepost=1564382366][/doublepost]You will have people complaining of you sounding muffled if you fold the iphone wallet/folio cover back. If you do this, the back microphone gets blocked causing your voice to be deemed as background noise. When you are on a call make sure the cover is closed across the front. If you look at the design of the Tech 21 Evo Wallet as an example, you will notice a cutaway up the top of the front cover to allow you to hear when it is closed.
