I'm not sure if this has been mentioned but what if the line at the bottom is actually going to be where you press to go home?

I see lots of reports of it all being gesture based and you lift up to unlock and go home but what if it's just this simple and you press on the line to go home and get haptic feedback we are now used to with the iPhone 7 and double press to bring up multitasking? Thoughts?
 
That was considered by Apple at some point, and they decided to switch the functionality to gesture-based for Home/Multitasking/Control Center combination while the new 'Side Button' gets other Home Button functionality like Siri, Apple Pay, Accessibility.
 
That’s a small tap target if you were to press it to go home.
