I couldn't find a proper thread to stick this in, so I created this one in hopes it'll be informative.

Like many of you, I too watched the keynote with dismay seeing the notch on the iPhone X covering videos that were playing. It just occurred to me -- the iPhone X does NOT have a 16:9 aspect ratio. However, most videos are 16:9. The iPhone X will probably even record in 16:9. What does that mean?

You will probably get letterboxing on the left and right sides of videos, just like what happens on the Galaxy S8, Note 8, and other phones with ultra-wide aspect ratios. I'm assuming you can double-tap on the video to fill the screen, just like you can do on iPads while viewing movies (since iPads are 4:3 aspect ratio). So all hope is not lost.

Just an encouraging thought. Cheers.

They've got a picture on the Apple website with Wonder Woman on the iPhone X with the notch.

Every app, photo and video they demo'd filled the screen with the notch plain as day. Looks ugly.

I'm almost certain there'll be an option to shrink down to avoid the notch.
Will be a bit disappointed if not.

Movies are typically filmed in wider-than-16:9 format, so in that usage case you're out of luck. I forgot about movies, good catch.

Thankfully photos are 4:3, so you're good. Just like if you go to the photos app right now on your current phone, the photos don't take up the entire screen. But you have to wonder why Apple was seemingly trying to show the notch onstage.

Doesn't look like a true screenshot, just looks like a rendering. This looks like a better resource https://forums.macrumors.com/thread...-for-full-screen-video.2066377/#post-25004218
Ah, I wish I had found that thread earlier, else I wouldn't have created this one. Thank you.

Here at 2:19 they show changing video size from full screen and shrinking down negating the notch.
That should address the issue for everyone annoyed with watching videos and having the notch cutting into the video.
