Don’t get me wrong ... I really like my iPhone X, but I feel like the phone would have been better if the made the phone with a more squat aspect ratio. The phone form factor should not have been designed to match the iPhone 7 with its bezels. It should have been designed from the ground up.

The screen is very tall and it’s extremely hard to reach the top right of the phone when it’s so tall.
A wider screen would have reduced the impact of the dreaded notch.
Furthermore, the height of the phone is what makes it harder to fit into jeans pockets.
Because the screen is just taller and not wider, a lot of content actually looks just the same ... and you don’t get a bigger or better experience. Instead, many apps just add white space.
Last, but not least, most apps and movies work better in landscape with a more squarish aspect ratio. A squat and wide aspect ratio is just hard to make a pleasant experience, especially if you ever bring up the keyboard.

I think with the bigger iPhone X Plus these issues will be even more magnified. Honestly, if they just chopped off the bezels of the iPhone 8 Plus it’d be nearly perfect.

The plus is considered to be a two handed device. Better get used to that idea now. I hope for reasons of fragmentation Apple sticks tot he same aspect ratio. It took long enough to get developers to update their apps for the iPhone X.

Yeah, it’s going to be two handed no matter what. But the displays at this point are already very fragmented anyway and the extra tall aspect ratio is actually just silly.

A 4:3 or 16:9 display would be more useful and fit better in the pocket.

I prefer the aspect ratio for cinematic widescreen videos

I love the rounded corners, they are so iPhone. Without them, the X would look just any other phone out there.

The design of the X brings a feeling of joy whenever I use it. Would not trade that for some miniscule increase in screen surface. Also, I do believe the rounded corners make the phone easier to hold.

I feel the same for a plus-sized device.

It's not really fragmented, especially when you compare it to android. The only supported legacy devices are the 5s and SE with will likely be dropped with iOS 12 and the next generation of iPhones.

If you refer to the chart below you can see there are only 4 supported point systems that iOS developers should worry about today. Apple will likely use the 414 pint system for an iPhone X Plus but extended to match the current iPhone X aspect ratio. Recycling the 16:9 414 x 736 aspect ratio would not be enough added benefit to entice new buyers. Especially when new apps are being developed for the new 19.5:9 aspect ratio. That would just aggravate developers.

There are Portrait people and there are Landscape people. The 5/6/7/8/X were designed for Portrait people. The Plus was designed for Landscape people.

For those who spend 95% of our time in Portrait, who don't watch movies or game, what we needed was extra height not extra width. Extra height brings us more content like lines of text, additional email previews, more phone numbers in contacts, etc. So the iPhone X is a dream for us because we keep the similar width, pick up a lot more height, and get a big bump in battery life.

For those who spend 95% of their time in Landscape, the Plus is still your go-to iPhone. If Apple chooses to release an X Plus (I personally don't think they will) that would solve your concerns. Apple didn't design the X incorrectly; they designed the X for a different user, one who doesn't watch movies or game much.

You would get most of that anyway with a wider screen as long as the app took advantage of the space properly. Many don’t and just zoom ... which was one of my annoyances with the Plus.

Here’s the other thing ... I have a lot more width left in my pocket than I do height. If the iPhone X were simply wider I could still carry it around just fine and have more screen space to boot. If they insist on this ultra tall aspect ratio nonsense, the Plus will still be too damn tall in my pocket and jabbing me in the stomach every time I move around.
