posting this here in case someone else has the same problem i did.
had an iphone 8 plus running 11.1 did an itunes backup.
plugged IPX into itunes to update to 11.1 in order to do a restore. ipx rebooted into recovery mode and update failed giving an error of (9). tried two cables and two PCs same result. one cable from from amazon the other was the one that came with the 8plus. called apple and while working with them on the phone. everything we tried failed to recover and phone only would boot to recovery.
the fix believe it or not was to unwrap the new cable that came with the X and itunes updated the phone perfectly.
