Came across this article on The Verge.

Without getting into the Face ID vs Touch ID debate, I was amazed how Apple could even consider not changing anything meaningfully for 4 years in a row!

With revenues close to 200 billion dollars, surely that very idea is very lazy. Or did they think they can get away with Iphone 8 models only this year?

Even if that article was true, we don't know the restrictions behind what could have caused a potential delay. But the reality is and all the matters, is the iPhone X is here and slated to release shortly.

Apple has released iPhone X. They are being shipped. People are getting them and using them as time goes on.

We see Apple's cut-off point of new iPhone design, which is great. Four year with the same design is quite lazy for a multi-billion (or trillion?) dollar company indeed. But maybe Apple think it is too big to fail.

In short, they can say whatever they want and that does not matter much anymore.

Thank Samsung and Google Pixel. Can’t imagine how slow Apple would be without them. We probably would have just got a OLED screen this year.

True. Without Samsung we wouldn't be here...
Apple hated OLEDs on phones (I never understood the color accuracy argument on a screen smaller than 6 inches!)
And they hated screens bigger than 4 inch (fear of cannibalizing ipad mini apparently)

This is not surprising to me. Since the keynote, I've thought that the X release was strange. Actually, the 8 release was what was strange. Had they released only the 8 series, I believe sales would have been dismal, and I believe they are smart enough to realize that.

Here is my fan theory..

They were faced with no release this year due to development delays on the X and decided it was either release another iteration of the 6-7 or release nothing. They opted to move forward on the 8 because it was quick and easy, then they were able to squeak out the X in time. Because they had already had the 8 far into development, they decided to release both. It explains the tight supply on the X.

Pixel? The phone that comes with fat bezels and looks like a iphone 8. Nah I won't thank that.

There’s no doubt whatsoever it was rushed to the market. I am waiting almost 2 months for delivery. It’s obvious.

I don't understand the obsession with design changes since car manufacturers do the same thing. One generation consists of 4-5 models.

Then look at iMac, MacBook, iPad, and Apple Watch. Not much design changes. Apple has always been conservative with design. The only time they really tried to change it up annually was with the iPods especially their iPod nano. Yet, Gen 1 & 2 and 4 & 5 looked similar.

The only brand that tries to change it up every single year is LG. Their G-series and V-series look different from each other.

Why not? If phones were only about functionality, then we could have simply stopped at Iphone 4 and upgrade processors.
People upgrade regularly and pay Apple a premium (a significant one at that) for desirability - and design changes are part of the appeal.
PS- Car manufactures do not make 50% profits!
