I have been dealing with this for nearly 3 months now with my daughters Iphone XR 256 camera. At first I thought it was a simply a software glitch and would hopefully be fixed in a update. Middle of January I finally contacted apple support. Told them what is happening and they said sure send it in and they would replace it. I sent a video as to show them what happened. Well they got it in and 2 days later received a email saying nothing is wrong with phone and sending it back. Got it back worked for her around a week and all started over. So again contacted support told them same thing. I was told it would be replaced. This person said oh there is nothing wrong with the phone we cant fix if nothing isnt wrong. I said you requested a video showing and I did upload it to the email. Was told to send it in again and provided more videos showing what the phone is doing. Week later got the phone back saying nothing is wrong. Im not home alot to do this over and over. I live 2 1/2 hours from a local apple store. I am fixing to send it in now for the 4th time. Im showing a youtube video to show what is happening and for some advice on what to do next. Apple has never given me this much trouble. They have always fixed the very few things I have had go wrong with their products. I have removed the sound as it is just my family. Thanks everyone for any advice.

While I know there are some people who will sit and defend Apple on anything and everything that's "Apple"... A sensible person knows there will be some issues with some things down the line. As you said it's very rare, but when it happens they're also very quick to fix said issue.

However, with this issue with your daughters Xʀ it’s pretty clear that it’s completely hardware related. Which means Apple should replace the device without any issue at all. It honestly sucks that you are about to be on your fourth time sending the device in with no resolve whatsoever. I had issues similar back in 2013. Apple had released the iPhone 5s and the iPhone 5C. On launch day my wife and I had decided on the iPhone 5c for whatever reason. Long story short my iPhone 5c was nothing but a ball of issues. Speaker problems, camera problems, launch board constantly respringing problems... the list goes on and goes on. I kept going in and out of Apple Stores and got the same result.

Moral to this story is to get into contact with the Apple Executive Offices. I did so by emailing Tim Cook. An “assistant” got back with me to discuss my concerns and issues. By this time I was on my 9th iPhone 5C. I wasn’t spending more of my time at the Apple Store for the same results. He contacted me on a Monday. On Tuesday he called me explaining what he had found in my case files. By Friday afternoon I had a brand new iPhone 5s to pickup from the Apple store. I wasn’t going into this for them to give me a “free” upgrade. I was just wanting a working device.

I think you should go this route as well.
