Hello everyone,

Yesterday I have bought the Xr 128 GB for my wife, for two reasons:

- her 4 years old 6Plus was nearly dead, with plenty of issues
- I decided to keep my 7 Plus for another year instead of buying now a Xs Max and passing the 7 Plus to my wife

The purchasing process at the Apple store here in the UAE was really smooth and quick despite the fact I didn’t make any reservation: 10 minutes and I was already out of the store with the color she wanted (the beautiful PRODUCT RED) and the desired memory size (128 GB).

I have also purchased the only case that the Apple store was offering for the Xr, the Otterbox.

Visually speaking the phone looks great, especially because of the super vibrant red color that is really amazing.

The bezels are pretty big, it’s true, but they do not really disturb me.

Screen quality is more than ok for the average user, so I would really recommend everyone that is still in doubt to buy an Xr to just go into a store and have a look: I bet that the majority of you won’t miss the OLED display considering the extra cost of an Xs Max.

Coming for a 6 Plus I was a little bit concerned about the learning curve to get used with the new gestures and features of the Xr, but after few minutes my wife was already super confident with her phone.
I must admit that I don’t miss the button at all and that Apple did an amazing job with the new gestures.

The phone setup was pretty easy and as soon as the back up from Cloud was restored, I immediately tested the WiFi connection with Ookla and the results between the Xr and my 7 Plus were identical.

Didn’t tested the LTE calls yet, but what I can tell is that I always seen the LTE (as usual here) on the screen and it never dropped to 3G.

Will let you know over the next few days how is going on the LTE side.

One small note about the case: nice, it looks really protective but it is really hard to insert the phone in it and to remove it (if you have to recharge the phone on a dock, for instance).
Something you should consider when choosing your case.

Overall speaking it looks like an amazing phone that will satisfy a large spectrum of customers.

I will let you know how does it perform on LTE over the next days but I feel that everything will work as expected.

What’s the otterbox case like to hold? I am getting a Product Red XR in January and will definitely case it, currently I use a Spigen Slim Armour and it’s quite a nice chunky case with rubberised edges and a hard back.

Looking at that pictures it looks like the whole case is rubberised, is this the case (no pun intended)

At the moment I am in 2 frames of mind, go for a clear one like the one you have or go for another black Spigen Slim Armour which has a cutout for the Apple logo which might look cool a black case with a red and silver apple logo underneath.

The slim armour has been a really good case for my X and I’ve dropped it loads with no issues, but the idea of a clear case on a red phone seems cool too.

I have the same phone, and I’m posting on MR for the first time in years because I think this is just a steal of a phone for what we paid. I think the XSM is an incredible device, but I just can’t get over the price. I find the XR to be exactly what I was looking for.

Something tells me though, or maybe it was a dream or one of the many threads I read on MR, that this is Apples play with the XS and XSM, that is to have them as reference points to direct the customers (me) to the XR. And they did their job! Yes, they will sell a lot of these and thats OK by me. It’s a no brainer purchase for someone looking for an upgrade, new experience, and see what all the fuss is about with Face ID and the new OS gestures.

Yes, I do confirm that the Otterbox is like a solid piece of rubber: maybe not the most elegant out there but I can bet that if a drop the phone out of my terrace it will land safely and will work without any issue...
In conclusion it depends pretty much on what you want the case doing for you: if its main job is protecting the phone, that’s what you need otherwise there will be plenty of fancy alternatives on the market.

Looks like that might be a contender for me, I don’t want a hard plastic shell case I prefer the rubberised ones. Thanks for the reply

That's what I did. I'm keeping my 7 Plus, and she's replacing her 6s.

Visually speaking the phone looks great, especially because of the super vibrant red color that is really amazing.
The matching red anodized aluminum is also beautiful. In fact, I think it's one of the most beautiful phones Apple has ever made, and nicer externally than the OLED models. It competes for best against the classic iPhone 4.

The bezels are pretty big, it’s true, but they do not really disturb me.
Same here.

True for most I'd say, but for some of us, the lower ppi is noticeable in some scenarios, specifically small text in Safari, etc.

That case ruins the aesthetics of that XR.
I'm not a big fan of that case either. But then again, the case I got is a big bulky purple one. Very protective, but not the prettiest. I did that because my kids grab the phone and then drop it. We lose the beautiful red since the case is opaque. I'll look to see what other cases are available soon that look good, but this was a good quality inexpensive case that was available before the XR launch, on Amazon.

It works because you chose a white phone, but that case just looks awful. I'm sure it'll protect the phone from drops. But, is there a clear case that shows the design and how attractive your phone looks. There's got to be a case out there.

I think a clear case will look bad on all colours except white. Haven't seen one picture from a different colour that pleased my eye.
