iPhone XR iPhone XR rear camera MP issue

noticed recently when my wife shares photos to a shared iCloud photo album we both have access to that her photos seem to be limited to 3PM in size, and as it happens to be my old phone I know it actually has a max 12MP rear camera and I definitely remember taking 12MP photos with that camera myself in the past. Anyone know what might be happening? cheers!
