Hello,

I live in the UK but I just so happen to be in Portland, Oregon on iPhone XR launch day so want to take advantage of the exchange rate and save myself a bit of cash.

Wondered if someone could clear something up for me? Obviously there is no Sim-Free option, but if you go through the ordering process, select Verizon as the carrier, and then select to pay the full $749, it says you get an Unlocked iPhone on the order page.

As far as I can tell, there's nothing stopping me pre-ordering on Verizon, and then as long as I pay in full, just taking it back to the UK and using it with my carrier there.

Or am I missing something?! Will Apple Store staff stand there and watch while I sign up to Verizon in store?!

Any help appreciated!

If you go to Apple Store and pay in full, they’ll all be unlocked. You don’t have to activate in store.

There won't be a SIM free model for at least a month or so due to demand on other XR products in all likelihood. Anyways, we have one model for each of the four carriers with CDMA and GSM capabilities. You're just getting extra "stuff" with your XR purchase. It should work unlocked if bought outright at an Apple Store.

Enjoy Portland, I was just there! You should be able to buy it from the Pioneer Place Apple Store.

And since you're coming from the UK, the public transport in Portland is just like the UK, you can just tap any contactless card (including Apple Pay!) on the HOP card readers, and no need to buy a pass. It will automatically stop charging you at $5, the price of a day pass! Use the buses and trains to go everywhere, you'll thank me later. :).

You'll also like the cleaner look of US iPhones, none of that FCC crap on the back, and 0682, and trash can thing they put on the back of the European ones.
