So my inlaw got the "unable to verify this iPhone has a genuine Apple battery" on her 8mos old iPhone XR, which I thought was interesting because the phone is all original being only 8mos old, but figured a battery failure can cause this message. Made an appointment for her, figured that it'd be a quick battery replacement. Turned out the Apple rep determined that the wireless charging module is causing the issue, and the whole phone was replaced. I tried to help her get a backup on my laptop before she brought it to Apple, but the phone kept shutting off in the middle, so unfortunately all her data is gone. Perhaps this will get her to have a regular backup routine.

Has anyone seen this failure before?

I guess this is quite a unique issue. Here's the email from Apple on the issue:

Problem Description/Diagnosis

Issue: Customer presented device with battery message and no charging issues.

Steps to Reproduce: Visually verified device with genuine battery message and incapable of charging, and unexpectedly restarting.
Charging both wired and wirelessly do not allow phone to charge or remain on.
Ran MRI and confirmed both battery and wireless presence failed.

Cosmetic Condition: Visual inspection shows no signs of physical damage or liquid damage on external liquid indicator. All device buttons, side button, volume buttons, sleep/wake switch, and/or home button are fully functional on device.

Proposed Resolution: Replace device under limited warranty at no cost to customer.
