Hi everyone. I have noticed some issues with my Max and wanted to make a post about them. I’m having 2 main problems which involve the ear pierce mesh and Taptic Engine.

First of my ear piece mesh seems to be slipping. I noticed 2 white dots on the top and thought it was dust but it wasn’t. The closer I looked it looked like 2 hooks that hold the mesh in place. I will attach pics.

The second problem I was having is the Taptic Engine. When I click the flashlight on the lock screen I get a loud click. I didn’t get this sound when I first got my phone and assumed it was a software bug. I did a full reset and it still hasn’t gone away. Here is the video. (For some reason I’m not able to upload the video)

Anyways I went to the apple store and spoke with them about my issues and showed them the pics and video and they are going to replace those parts under limited warrenty. I find it odd that a brand new phone (had it since September preorder) needs parts replaced. Here’s what they are replacing.

I don’t know why they are replacing the entire screen but ok. I booked an appointment for the repair tomorrow. I am a person who likes to keep my devices clean and like new. I am just very paranoid that when they do the repair they will scratch my phone mistakenly. I’ve seen the YouTube videos of the max being opened up and it looks very abrasive. I just don’t want any scratches.

I’m contemplating whether or not to go ahead with the reaper because of my paranoia. This is my first time sending my device to apple for a repair.

Also I’ve heard stories and read reviews that people’s devices got worse after a repair and they had to run around the apple store to get it resolved. Just so many things driving me crazy.

Out of curiosity I looked at other Max phones to see if they had the same issues as me and I was surprised to see that most of them made the same exact clicking noise. Idk what’s going on. Everyone check your device if you have a max for these problems. Spending 1k+ on this device and already having problems is unacceptable.

Instead of having my device repaired I am going to ask if they can just give me a brand new max and have me turn in this one. This sounds more reasonable to me as opposed to having all these things fixed. What do you guys think?

Has anyone sent their device to the apple repair and had any issues? Idk what to do. Please give me any advice.

Thank you!

You are always taking a chance that you phone will be damaged during the repair.

There are no "hooks" that hold the mesh screen in place. It is held in place with an adhesive.

My MAX does not make a sound when I press the camera or flashlight button from the lock screen. I do get a haptic feedback. But there is a setting that will cause the phone to also make a sound when these buttons are pressed. You must be on by default.

I am not sure I would want some geek tearing my phone apart, breaking the water resistant seal, to fix these issues but that is your choice.

Some of the parts list to be replaced are unavoidable when you take a phone apart. The speaker is also held with adhesive and the always replace with new.

I doubt they are going to replace your phone for a tiny spec on the grill and a sound you can get rid of in settings. Hard to believe that you blame Apple for this.

If the lock screen switch is set to loud the flashlight button on the lock screen makes a new clicking sound. This was introduced recently.

In other words, the louder you have the system volume, the louder the clicking sound will be.

The click sound is normal as above, it's the update. It's like you are turning on a real flashlight that makes those similar sound (button type flashlight).

As for the ear piece mesh, I would not even worry about the issue. It's just aesthetic that you are worrying about. It's a tool that is meant to be used.

As for your concerns, if Apple screws up during the repair, they will replace you with a replacement unit at no cost. My wife iphone 7 Plus went in for a battery replacement but ended up getting dust in between the screen. Since it's out of warranty, they would have charged us, but since I mentioned that it wasn't there before the battery replacement. Apple practically wrote off the charge and we did not have to pay a penny for a new screen replacement. Phone is still in good condition as it was before.

Its not a tiny speck on the grill. You can see the mesh sliding down some. As for the clicking sound I know you get a taptic feedback but this sound is a high pitched tick. (I dont know why its not letting me post the video of that noise. Its a .MOV file). I turn off all the lock sounds so no its not those. Ive been using apple iphones since they first came out and i love them. I dont expect to see these small problems happening in the first place. The apple employees took my phone into to back and ran tests and decided they would fix the issues by replacing the components. I dont want my phone to opened but i dont want the mesh slipping and me having to look at those ugly dots or whatever they are. I think swapping for a new one is reasonable because they are essentially replacing the entire screen, speaker, and taptic engine. They said they would use new parts but there is always a possibility refurbished ones can be used and i dont want that. Paying such a high price for a device no one should expect any of these problems to begin with. Lets see what they say tomorrow.

You won’t get a brand new device. If anything it’ll be a refurbished device.

Looking at your image with your feet in the background, the mesh screen looks normal to me. How do you figure it is sliding down?

Because he stared at it for 2 hours and is sure he saw it move. :)

Just kidding OP, I'm not sure if those are even issues but good luck!

Apple provide a 1 year limited warranty against manufacturing or material defects, so by offering to replace parts of your phone to fix it they are fulfilling their duty.

They are under no obligation to give you a whole new phone. Why should they?

If you don’t want them to fix your phone for fear of them damaging it then that’s up to you.

They’re a business and if they can fix your device cheaper than a new one would cost to them then that’s what they’ll do.

You say you shouldn’t expect this after paying such a high price but it happens hence why there is a warranty.

Sometime I did not want Toyota fix my 12 year old camry when there were some recalls, I just want a brand new. 2006 Camry.

I thought something was wrong with my phone also when i turned on the flashlight. Turns out it’s working as normal.
