I plan on preordering the new iPhone XS with my debit card. Does apple charge you as soon as you preorder or do they wait till it's about to ship?

Normally they put a hold on your card to check it has funds then releases it til it ships then it goes out

They pretty much will place a temporary hold, which then disappears but will actually charge you when the phone ships. It all depends on how your bank handles it. My bank typically places a hold temporary, which then gets dropped but once the device actually ships, it will be an official auth.

Thanks for the reply. The temporary hold is the whole amount? And what happens if you don't have the whole amount when comes preorder time?

You press the "order" button and a temp charge for the full amount usually shows up. It drops off after a day or two then shows up again when it ships. Depending on your bank, it might be declined if you don't have the amount in your bank account.

Typically it's the full amount. It would be best if you do have the full amount on your bank at the time you pre-order. If you don't, then the order may not go through.
