Yes you can update to 4.0 but you will have to jb again and install ultrasnow from cydia.

Good point. I rather have 3.0 running good, than 4.0 not good.

I went ahead and jumped to 4.0 on my 3G. I find it just as slow as it was before. Of course I had backgrounds running before on 3.1.2, so maybe I'm just used to it (or I have a bunch of patience).

The Jailbreak was easy. I tried two different methods. First was Snowbreeze. Was simple enough but email push was broken (I think because I hacktivated). So I then tried Redsnow, which is much easier. Update to 4.0 from iTunes then run Redsnow to add Cydia and other functions (background, multitasking, etc.)

I purchased a 3Gs off eBay, got a great deal, but it came with 4.0 already on it. Can't wait to be able to Jailbreak that.

Give it a try.
If you dont like it you can go back down to 3.1.3 again and JB and unlock.

manually back up your pics - 4 times out of 5 a backup fails to save my pics. Dead serious.
