iphone4 won't sync calendar (or contacts?) with outlook 2010

My iphone4 used to sync calendar as well as contacts etc fine, now it says it hasn't synced contacts because 'the sync server failed to sync', but actually it's not syncing the calendar either, not that it tells me that. Running 4.3.2 on Windows 7. Help much appreciated, missed an appointment already because of this, grrr...
Have tried deleting sync history, power on and off, removing 3rd party add-ins and replacing info on iphone under Advanced.

plucked up my courage and did a restore. It DIDN'T offer me nice screens like it said on the apple site offering options about backing up, which was nerve wracking but it did work and everything seems to be there, phew!
