Iphone4s change SMS and email sound

You can customize a contact's personal ringtone/SMS tone in their contact information.
Or, if you're looking to add new tones you can purchase them through iTunes on your iPhone, or create your own and import them into iTunes on your Mac.

Apple makes it VERY hard

Android is for sure more open but I needed a third party application to get customized text tones on my Razr.
No third party app needed. All you need to do is create a folder on your sdcard (internal or external) and call it Ringtones. Put whatever sounds/songs you want in that folder. Done. Same goes with notification sounds. Create a folder called....you guessed it, Notifications. Drag whatever sounds/songs you want into that folder. Done. Simple huh? Gotta wonder why Apple can't make "it just work" like that.

My bad. You're right. I was meaning to say you need a third party app to assign a custom sms tone to a specific contact. iOS let's you do this. I like having a custom tone for the GF, sister, etc. Let's me know who's texting without looking.
For every contact you can set a custom ringtone and SMS tone.
I'm not sure if every ringtone you import can be used as a SMS tone, but I do know that you can purchase SMS tones in iTunes (they're called Alert Tones).
