The wouldn't put "new" on the box. They didn't do it for iPad either.

Pray to God Tim Cook doesn't call it a "new" iPhone or we better brace ourselves for a whole new round of morons spouting "new" as part of the name like they did with iPad.

still think iPhone 5 is wrong, its the 6th generation

Like I read somewhere, we don't call the current iMac, the iMac number 13 or whatever number its at....its just "iMac"

The new iPhone sounds fine to me

I was thinking though, they didn't call the new iPad the 3, so why does everyone think this one is going to follow a numerical name?

1. The "5" in the Sept 12th event invitation.
2. As another member said, slapping on a "S" every other year allows them to sell a crap load of new iPhones with very little changed, and this is a little difficult to do if they market it as "the new iPhone S"

This. If they drop the numerics on the iPhone, it will make their release procedure a cluster fck. Desktops and laptops don't abide by the same rules as phones. When was the last time the guy at Tim Hortons asked which iMac you have? It's fine being an iMac. the general public, who these phones are for (believe it our not) would be so lost. I mean, its the "new iPad" right? Hell, it's even called the iPad3. which I find atrocious. wouldnt iPad'12 be more fitting?

I guess I could support the year numerics for the phone as well.

Good point... But the could just do it like this...

iPhone (2012)
iPhone S (2013) [technically it could be any letter]
iPhone (2014)
iPhone S (2015)

and so on...

When there are three models out... they could easily be referred to by year.

----------------------------------------

However, someone did make a really good point about the iPad... since they new they were working on the iPad Mini, they chose to drop it to just "iPad"...

So next year it wasn't:

iPad 4 and iPad Mini 2

It is the same with iPod... iPod Classic, iPod Nano(Formerly Mini), iPod Touch, and iPod Shuffle

Can't imagine they would even consider putting "mini" and "iPad" in the same name! Might as well call the larger one the "Maxi iPad"
