iPhone's serial number and naiveness.

Hi,

Searching and reading some threads to fix a problem I had with my iPhone last week, I noticed that people were reticent to reveal the complete serial number for their iPhone. I don't want to look naive but why is so??

The reason I ask is because some people can tell what one has for a bootloader if one provides the serial number. If I wan to know what I have for a bootloader how many numbers of the serial number should I provide ??
